Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based upon your height and weight. BMI applies to men and women.

How BMI is Calculated

The formula for calculating BMI is:

Weight / (Height * Height)) * 703

Assume you are 5'8" tall (68 inches) and 240 pounds. To calculate your BMI:

  • Multiple your height in inches (68") by your height in inches (68"). 68 x 68 = 4,624.
  • Divide your weight (240) by the answer above (4,624 in this example). 240 / 4624 = .051903
  • Multiple the result by 703. .051903 x 703 = 36.48. This is your BMI.

The BMI Scale

The following chart helps determine where you fall on the scale:

Classification BMI
Underweight Less than 19
Ideal BMI 19-24.9
Overweight 25-29.9
Obese 30-34.9
Severely Obese 35-39.9
Morbidly Obese 40-49.9
Super Obese 50 or more
